Video KYC — VKYC — is a way to complete identity verification over a live video interaction instead of an in-person meeting. It became widely used in Indian financial services as a remote-onboarding route. This is a plain explainer of what it is and how it works; it is not a Certopact feature.
How VKYC typically works
- The customer joins a live, recorded video session with a trained agent (or a guided flow).
- They present identity documents to the camera, which are captured and checked.
- The agent confirms the person is live and matches the document — a liveness and face-match step.
- Location and other signals may be captured; the session is recorded for audit.
Where it is used
VKYC is most associated with banks, NBFCs and fintechs onboarding customers remotely, where regulations permit a video-based process as an alternative to a branch visit.
Strengths and limits
- Strength — remote, no branch visit, with a recorded audit trail.
- Strength — a live agent or flow adds a human or automated liveness check.
- Limit — needs a good connection and can queue at peak times.
- Limit — it is process-heavy and regulator-specific; rules vary by sector.
How this relates to Certopact
Certopact does not offer VKYC. For identity verification it uses source-verified methods — Aadhaar OTP (AUA/KUA), DigiLocker documents and offline OVSE — so a person is confirmed against an authoritative source rather than over a video call.
