To authenticate Aadhaar online, you go through a UIDAI-licensed Authentication User Agency (AUA) or e-KYC User Agency (KUA). But getting that licence directly is out of reach for most organisations. That's where the Sub-AUA model comes in.
What an AUA / KUA is
An AUA is an entity UIDAI has licensed to send authentication requests; a KUA can also retrieve e-KYC attributes. They connect to UIDAI through approved infrastructure and are bound by UIDAI's rules.
Why most enterprises don't hold one
The licence carries significant compliance, audit and infrastructure obligations — disproportionate for a company that simply wants to verify visitors or customers. Few non-specialists pursue it.
The Sub-AUA model
A Sub-AUA operates under a licensed AUA, so your organisation can verify Aadhaar online without holding the licence yourself — the licensed partner handles the UIDAI connection and compliance. You get authentication and e-KYC; they carry the licensing burden.
And offline needs no licence at all
Offline verification (OVSE) validates a UIDAI-signed artefact the resident shares — no live call, and no AUA licence required. Many sites use offline by default and online where a live check is warranted.
